Visa Pizza Italiano

A couple of years of DVR use led to the demise of this blog (seriously, what was that last post even about?). But traditional TV viewing is back, and I have quite a few commercials to write about. What better commercial to start with than this one, a spot that advertises delicious pizza a credit card! (ps I totally used code to make that strike-through. A glorious new era, indeed!)

This commercial isn't funny in the same sense as those I wrote about when this blog started. It is more funny-strange. Take away the text, the voiceover, and the two second shot of the credit card, and you'd never guess that this is advertising Visa. Here is a list of other products that this commercial makes me want:

1. pizza (duh)
This pizza appears to be delicious. Luckily, I live in NYC now and I can have delicious pizza anytime I want. I could write an entire book on my thoughts concerning pizza so I'm going to stop myself here.

2. this extremely romantic, yet fun, Italian restaurant

Some brief online investigation reveals that this was filmed in Argentina. Why, I couldn't say. But I have a feeling I will not be going to this restaurant anytime soon.

3. the pizzaiolo

Look at that grace! Look at that face! And it seems I am not the only one to be swooning over this man's beauty and pizza-tossing skills. In April of last year, Stuart Elliot of the New York Times responded to a reader's question as to this man's identity (scroll to the bottom!).

This pizzaiolo is named Juan Hermosillo and he is the captain of the US Pizza Team (There is such a thing? New life goal!). His bio is skimpy, but this video will tell you a little more about him.

4. a recording of "Mambo Italiano"

This Wikipedia article pretty much summarizes everything I was going to say about "Mambo Italiano". I will just add this song will always be associated with camp for me. Nothing like singing in PJs on bunk beds to a catchy tune like this!

5. mascara

I guess it's not really this woman's barely voluptuous lashes that leave me wanting mascara so much as the fact that dreamy pizzaiolo is reflected right below them.

Back to Back in Black

I just stumbled upon this commercial while going to shop online at the gap.com (it's on the homepage). It's not a particularly funny commercial but I rather feel like expressing myself so here it is.

Apparently this dancing is taken from the movie Funny Face. I must admit, I've never seen Funny Face so I have no idea if she really says "If a girl wants to dance, a girl wants to dance" a billion times. I have a feeling she doesn't though, it's kinda weird.

I really like audrey hepburn and how elegant she is and obvi the gap assumes most people agree with me. It's funny that they are advertising for clothes that aren't even in the commercial. This is a commercial for The Gap's new "Audrey Pant"- skinny black jeans inspired by Audrey Hepburn. I'm almost positive the pants shes wearing in this commercial werent made by the gap.

Homemade!

While I'm at it, I'll just keep going. Here is the longest commercial that will probably ever be on this blog. It's nearly 5 minutes of YPMB awesomeness and was made for the joint purpose of convincing impressionable freshman that the ypmb is cool and of entertaining the people who are in it.

Ok, secret time. I made this video with Ben. So I have nothing bad to say about it. Here's why this video (which we spent ALL DAY making) is Fing Sweet.
1. That first part is funny, isnt it? We made that up.
2. Because the band doesnt actually march well ever, it was really hard to find a clip to use with "And march in perfect step". That's why that clip of us in a Y is so short (and it's already slowed down a lot so itll last)
3. It has my backyard! And my house! (basically anything that looks like a backyard or a house is mine)
4. AC/DC
5. Phoebe brought me coffee and a cookie while I was making it cause she's totally cool.

Ok I guess I don't really like bragging so I'm going to stop now. Mostly I just wanted to share this some more and fish for compliments in the comments so go write something nice!

I am WOman

This Burger King commercial was one of the first that I liked enough to write about. I forgot about it for a while but today I remembered (thanks Matt!) and I have a little time so here it is:

I must say, I liked this commercial a lot more before I was empowered a couple of nights ago. Jeez, I wonder if they got in trouble for being sexist. Ok but anyway this isn't a serious blog so I won't write about that too much. Instead I'll write about the commercial and why I thought it was funny.

Well first of all, I liked it cause the main man is kinda cute in a way you don't usually see in commercials. And, for being so concerned about being manly, he's certainly dressed very nicely. I also like that he stood up and started singing in the middle of a restaurant. Sometimes I feel like doing that so I totally emphasize.

Ok, if he's gonna get mad about "chick food", I guess that gross thing he's served is something to get mad about. I mean, it just looks disgusting! What is it? A shrimp drizzled with grossness? Yuck. At least it doesn't even look that healthy. If it were something like a salad this commercial would turn from anti-small portions to anti-taking care of your heart, and that probably wouldn't be a good move on Burger King's part.

This commercial is really similar to the Maria Sharapova one in that there are TONS of people in it. I'll highlight some of my favorites:
The karate chop man who breaks a cinder block, the construction worker who punches his friend for the hell of it (or for the Whopper, I can't tell), and the man who pulls a dump truck filled with minivan. (ok i guess most of the other men just arent that distinguishable from the crowd).

The lyrics are something else I liked. Any commercial that can use both "I am incorrigible" and "Till my innie turns into an outie" within a minute is a little genius.

Going back to the appearance of that first guy, I guess none of the guys in this commercial are really super hottttt. I suppose it's to make this commercial appeal to the every-man (and not to the every-woman). I mean, I don't know if any of you guys will remember what this commercial was for, but I didn't- let alone go buy a double texas whatever. I saw that burger and threw up in my mouth a little. I mean, I like burgers a lot but man that's just too much meat.

And the conclusion of this post: I am a woman and this commercial was made for men so I did not buy a whopper whatever.

Nike Women feel so pretty

I just can't stop with this blogging thing! Since I just did an old(ish) favorite, now I'm going to write about a commercial I saw for the first time a couple days ago while I was watching sports center. Here's the ad:

Maria Sharapova Nike Ad

Summary: The ad follows Maria Sharapova as she makes her way from her hotel room to a tennis match. As she goes (sulking the whole time), everyone she passes- from the hotel's staff to the ball girl on the court- sings a line or two from West Side Story's "I Feel Pretty". They all stop once she starts playing tennis and makes one of those grunt noises. The announcers say "wow" and then the crowd cheers and Maria S settles down to kick some ass.

I guess this ad is supposed to make us realize that although a Nike Woman may look gorgeous on the outside, shes really all strength and athleticism once she starts to do her thing. I suppose this was supposed to make me want to but nike clothing or shoes but really, all it did was make me want to be Maria Sharapova.

The thing that makes this commercial hilarious is the people singing. The song is a perfect song for any comedy cause it's just so stupid. I was in West Side Story once and the director let us know that he hated "I Feel Pretty" and mused about how to cut it from the show for a long time but it just had to stay because it was one bright moment in a series of dark dark things. And dark is no good for a musical. Nor for a commercial.

Anyway, the great part is the people who are singing the song. My very favorite is the ballgirl with braces. She has a super voice (unlike the other people in the commercial) and normally that would seem stupid but she has braces so I'm glad she can sing well if she has to be on TV in braces.
Also great are the following-
The elevator man who's totally checking her out
The rich old couple in the hotel lobby
the paparazzi!
the announcers
the camera man with the beard
the tennis official who looks like hes making a call but is actually singing
I really hate the reporter as shes walking into the stadium who sings "whos the pretty girl in that mirror there" kinda for the opposite reason I like the ballgirl. The reporter has a terrible voice but isnt nearly attractive enough to make up for that.

All in all, this is a hilarious commercial although not very effective in selling its stuff.

oh ps I just realized the character who sings this in WSS is named Maria, just like Maria Sharapova!

The facebook is letting me put a blog on so now I need to start one. I was thinking of doing this all summer, actually. I ended up watching a ton of TV this summer and I made the discovery that commercials often play directly to my sense of humor. As the summer went on, I found myself flipping away from commercials less and less and talking along with them more and more. The following commercial was by far my favorite of the summer:

T-mobile Cheerleader Commercial

Basically, it's hilarious. There are a lot of these T-Mobile commercials but this is by far the best. The girl has the squeekiest voice and can talk so fast. My favorite lines are the following:
"I love chewing gum!"
"You got your head stuck in the sunroof? thats sooooo not good!"
"I was like WHATEVER and he was like whatever..."
"I was gonna be the only one with the white swimsuit and then she got one too"

There really isn't much more to say about this commercial. It's easy to remember that its for T-Mobile since it's one of a series. I did not, however switch to T-Mobile. I guess I worry more about the way the phone looks than about how many minutes are on it, although I am a big talker.

Anyway I need to go meet emily for a walk, which is, like, totally important. Also, we should prolly boycott tuna for a while, because this cheerleader says so.
